語言對人類進行思想感情的溝通、進行有聲思維起著重要作用，同時它又能喚起人們的各種想象。恩格斯認為語言是為適應交際的迫切需要而產生的，它一旦產生便成為人類最重要、最高級的交際手段。[1][P165]當人們使用某些詞語時，這些詞語所指對象的形象會生動地浮現在人們眼前，同時會引起相應的心理反應。因此語言表達的好壞與否將會導致不同的結果，即使是很普通的一句話，如果表達欠佳也可能造成隔閡或者使對方的感情受到傷害；相反，如果說得巧妙就能打動人，使對方心悅誠服。基于這個原因，為了盡量避免直接使用哪些表示令人不快的事物的詞語或讓人產生不安、恐懼、悲傷或厭惡等情緒的詞語，出現了委婉語。
